Mother of political prisoner suffers stroke after brutal beating of her son

Yenisey Taboada Ortiz, mother of Duannis León Taboada, a political prisoner from the July 11th massacre, suffered a stroke after receiving news that her son had been brutally beaten at the Combinado del Este prison in Havana and subsequently transferred to solitary confinement. Yenisey is currently hospitalized at the Joaquín Albarrán Clinical Surgical Hospital, known as "El Clínico de 26," awaiting neurological evaluation.

This deplorable incident occurs amidst a context of escalating repression against political prisoners in Cuba and their families. We urge the authorities to provide immediate medical attention to both Yenisey Taboada and her son, whose health remains a cause for concern following the beating.

Furthermore, Tania Tasé, through her social networks, has made an urgent appeal to locate a hospital in Havana that is performing computed axial tomography (CAT) scans and a neurologist who can attend to Yenisey immediately, given the seriousness of her condition.

On the other hand, Anamely Ramos has informed Yoanky Báez Albornoz, another political prisoner from the 11J massacre and a friend of Duannis León, is on hunger strike in the same prison. The situation inside the prison remains critical.

Duannis León Taboada, 26, and Yoanky Báez Albornoz, 30, are serving 14-year prison sentences for their participation in the protests of July 11, 2021.

From Cubalex, we will continue to monitor the situation and call on the international community to remain vigilant regarding these cases of violence and abuse in Cuban prisons, especially against political prisoners.
