Following daily monitoring of the human rights situation in Cuba during the month of August, Cubalex presents this narrative report offering a legal interpretation of the collected statistical data. Our primary conclusion is that the human rights situation in Cuba continues to deteriorate. Furthermore, it is concerning that, amidst a highly adverse economic, social, and political context, state agents prioritize repression.
This month saw 116 incidents of repression, mostly affecting isolated victims. The state agents responsible for these acts of repression primarily belong to the State Security Department of the Ministry of the Interior. However, this month also saw notable involvement from prosecutors and judges, who report to the Ministry of Justice.
Data analysis confirms that anyone in Cuba can be a victim of repression, regardless of their political motivations or ideology. The state focuses on suppressing citizen and political participation, as well as the exercise of fundamental rights. Simply expressing discontent on social media about one's economic situation is sufficient grounds for repression.
However, Cubalex has identified that the most frequent victims are at-risk groups, due to the work they do. These include activists, human rights defenders, opposition members, and independent journalists.
