On January 9, State Security in Pinar del Río summoned and harassed several activists after they organized a solidarity activity for children as part of the celebration of Three Kings Day on January 6.
José Rolando Casares Soto, his wife Yamilka Abascal Sánchez, and Roberto Blanco Gil were arrested at their homes and taken in a patrol car to the unit known as “El Técnico,” located at kilometer 4 on the highway to San Juan y Martínez. Eduardo Pujol Valladares, for his part, was verbally summoned; however, he demanded an official summons in accordance with the law and decided not to appear.
During the interrogation, Casares Soto was accused of “using and politicizing children” and received a warning. Authorities also noted that the foundation that donated the toys for the initiative is included on the Cuban government's official list of terrorist organizations.
These repressive actions reflect a systematic pattern of silencing those who raise their voices in Cuba. The initiative, which consisted of distributing toys, was interpreted as a political act, highlighting the climate of state control and repression faced by activists.
